What to expect from pivotal weekend for Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham, who need help from other Premier League sides during the run in, prepare for a pivotal weekend in the top four race when Newcastle head to London on Sunday.

It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway. Tottenham need to take care of their own business and have absolutely no room for error. That of course means taking all three points on Sunday when Eddie Howe’s resurgent Newcastle come knocking.

Manchester United host Leicester on Saturday and are heavy favourites to win. The Foxes have the fourth worst away record in the top flight, which doesn’t bode well for Spurs. Expect United to keep the pressure on with another three points. They should finish the weekend on 53 points after 30 matches.

Frontrunners Arsenal travel to Crystal Palace on Monday, the day after Spurs’ take on Newcastle. It’s another comparatively easy fixture for the Gunners, who’ve been firing on all cylinders lately. Palace has the 11th best home record in the division, but Patrick Vieira’s side, other than pride, has little else to play for in the final two months of the season.

So if the results play out in actuality like they’re supposed to hypothetically, every team competing for fourth spots will be victorious, leaving the standings as is come next weekend’s fixtures.

On Saturday, April 9, Arsenal, who play Brighton at home, have another favourable fixture to look forward to, while Manchester United have a potentially tricky contest at Everton. The Toffees are playing poorly but are in a battle for their Premier League lives and will give everything not to lose at home to United.

Spurs travel to the Midlands for a challenging match against Steven Gerrard’s upstart Aston Villa side. Villa will provide a stern test for Antonio Conte’s men, who must win to keep the pressure on the Gunners.

Admittedly, it’s a particularly concerning contests. But in order to mount a challenge for fourth spot, Spurs will need to be triumphant at Villa Park.
