West Ham star Gianluca Scamacca looks set to be dropped in favour of Leeds United man Wilfried Gnonto for the crunch Italy game tonight.

As reported by Hammers News earlier, the talk in Italy is that Roberto Mancini is set to deal a crushing blow to West Ham’s new £35m forward by shaping the Italy team around his former Sassuolo strike partner Giacomo Raspadori.

When Scamacca signed for the Hammers he revealed he had spoken to Italy manager Mancini who gave the move a ringing endorsement, saying West Ham and the Premier League were “perfect” for him.

One of the reasons West Ham were so excited to get Scamacca was because he had been dubbed Italy’s big new striker hope.

Italian football media have long championed Scamacca as the answer to their attacking woes.

There has also been hype surrounding new Leeds United forward Gnonto.

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch signed the diminutive attacker from FC Zurich in the summer and there have been high hopes for him at Elland Road.

West Ham reportedly tried to hijack the Leeds move for Gnonto.

It has been a slow start to life in the Premier League with West Ham for Scamacca as David Moyes elects to drip-feed the 6ft 5in star into English football.

Scamacca played well in the first half of Italy’s Nations League win over England on Friday and went close to scoring.

But he faded in the second half and was substituted. In his absence Raspadori – himself a former Hammers target – scored a wonderful winner as the central striker.

Leeds star Gnonto also impressed. And it will be his compatriot down at West Ham who will now suffer it seems.

As Hammers News relayed this morning, Mancini looks likely to build the Italy team around Raspadori with a tweaked formation.

And he will expedite those plans for Italy’s crunch Nations League group decider against Hungary on Monday night according to the likes of Football Italia.

Now Scamacca must hope he can get a chance as a substitute and strive to make a big impact.

Not only to try to win back his Italy place and perhaps change Mancini’s mind.

But also to send a message to Moyes that he is ready to start for West Ham when they take on Wolves in their own crucially important match this Saturday.
