West Ham star Vladimir Coufal has locked down out his social media after abuse he has received over a Man United incident.

It is the way of the modern game that social media and football go hand-in-hand.

And that’s not always a good thing – just ask any number of stars on display when West Ham took on Manchester United at the weekend.

The Hammers were harshly beaten 3-0 by Man United at Old Trafford.

But the game came at a cost for the Red Devils and Erik ten Hag after they lost returning star Lisandro Martinez to injury.

Man United have now confirmed that the diminutive Argentine defender will now be out for eight weeks with a medial collateral ligament injury.

Coufal locks down social after Man United incident

And one Hammers star in particular has had the blame placed squarely at his feet by some angry Manchester United supporters.

Vladimir Coufal was fighting Martinez for the ball as the Man United man was shepherding it out for a goal kick.

As the pair fell, Coufal was upended and landed on Martinez’s leg, twisting his knee in the process.

Now West Ham star Coufal has locked out his social media after abuse over the Man United incident.

It’s never nice to see a player get injured. But the unfortunate incident was clearly a complete accident on the West Ham man’s part.

Martinez even acknowledged Coufal gratefully when the Czech full-back ran over to him to offer his genuine sympathy as he left the pitch.

Anti-social as Coufal goes private

But some supposed Man United fans have vented their frustration by sending Coufal abusive messages on his previously public Instagram account.

Coufal regularly shares posts with his 113k following on the platform.

But he has now switched it to private after reportedly being inundated with abuse from “Man United fans”.

By going “private” Coufal can now screen requests to follow him on Instagram.

In many ways Coufal and Martinez are cut from the same cloth. Both warriors who leave it all out on the pitch every game.

It’s terrible he feels he has to lock his account down. And some so-called Hammers fans have disgraced themselves too by gloating about the injury sustained by the Argentine.

So much for “social” media. More like anti-social media.

Two words for all those sending such vile messages: grow up.
