West Ham made a massive mistake not signing hat-trick hero striker target Aleksandar Mitrovic who could have been a cult hero at the club.

Serbian striker Mitrovic has been a reported West Ham target in almost every single transfer window in recent memory.

West Ham were even linked with a move for the 28-year-old forward back in December last year as he ripped up the Championship with Fulham.

Whenever West Ham were linked with Mitrovic, though, there were always doubters among Hammers fans who felt he simply wasn’t up to being a Premier League striker.

Well he is proving those sceptics wrong and then some so far this season.

Mitrovic already has six Premier League goals this season and he continues to score freely at international level too.

Now it is clear West Ham made a massive mistake not signing hat-trick hero striker target Mitrovic who could have been a cult hero in east London.

Mitrovic scored three goals as Serbia beat Sweden 4-1 last night.

And it took his tally to 49 in 75 games for his country. With 171 domestic league goals to his name, the hat-trick brought his career total for his clubs and Serbia to a phenomenal 220 goals in 434 matches.

He became Serbia’s all-time top scorer in the process.

Many believed Mitrovic was too slow and cumbersome to be a hit at West Ham.

But he is a striker who gives his absolute all in every single game in much the same way Andy Carroll did.

Unlike Carroll, Mitrovic is supremely robust and always fit and available for selection. He uses his strength to maximum effect and could have been a real cult hero for the Hammers.

West Ham fans love a player who gets stuck in and puts his body on the line for the club.

Mitrovic and West Ham would have been a match made in heaven. But that ship has sailed now it seems after the Hammers signed Gianluca Scamacca.

The 6ft 5in Italian is another forward who puts himself about and relies on his strength like Mitrovic.

If he gets half as many goals in his career he’ll be doing something right.
