West Ham United assistant coach Paul Nevin has issued a reassuring transfer update on behalf of Hammers boss David Moyes.

In an effort to explain the lack of additions to his shallow and creaking West Ham squad after the January window, Moyes insisted that he only wanted players who would improve on what he had.

Italy striker Gianluca Scamacca certainly does that following his much welcomed £35m arrival from Sassuolo this week.

The Scot stated in several in-depth interviews that West Ham needed to sign at least six or seven quality players in a big rebuild this summer.

Scamacca was the fourth signing of this window but only the third new face from last season.

Another awkward performance in a 0-0 draw at Lens on Saturday suggests Moyes’ statements about the number of signings he needs will be about right.

But they must all be quality additions who – as he has so often insisted – improve on what he already has.

Rumours have abound all week that Eintracht Frankfurt star Filip Kostic is next on Moyes’ wish list.

A meeting was allegedly held between the Serbian assist king and his agent on Friday but things have fallen quiet on that front since.

There have been links to Amadou Onana, Piotr Zielinski and Hirving Lozano too while Maxwell Cornet’s name continues to be mentioned in Hammers circles.

While all of us – and undoubtedly Moyes – would rather have had all the signings done and dusted before the start of the new season, that has clearly not been possible.

But then even the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United are finding that difficult.

One thing is certain, West Ham are not done yet when it comes to signings. There is now just over a month to go until the summer transfer window shuts.

And West Ham assistant coach Nevin has provided a reassuring transfer update on behalf of Moyes.

Nevin says Moyes knows only too well West Ham cannot afford to stand still after the amazing progress of the last two years and insists the Scot is pushing to make more signings (whufc.com).

“The manager is always looking to improve the team,” Nevin told whufc.com.

“We did amazing things last season, but if you stand still you fall behind.

“Again, it’s part of the work we’re doing that we’re looking to continually improve the squad.”

If West Ham can somehow pull the Kostic signing off and get in another central midfielder such as Onana or Zielinski then they will almost be there.

Fingers crossed for a big week.
