Long lost loanee Manny Longelo has fired a reminder to West Ham by scoring a beauty for Birmingham against QPR.

With Aaron Cresswell approaching the swansong of his career and Arthur Masuaku clearly having no future at West Ham, many had high hopes for exciting young left-back Longelo.

David Moyes clearly liked what he saw from the Hammers academy graduate, regularly including him in first team squads over the last couple of seasons.

But in the summer West Ham made something of a surprise decision to loan the marauding left-back out to Championship side Birmingham City while spending £13.5m to sign 28-year-old Emerson.

West Ham’s announcement of Longelo’s loan at the end of August did not give any indication as to whether his long-term future could be in east London.

“The 21-year-old will spend the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign at St Andrew’s, under the guidance of head coach John Eustace, with the former Stoke City and Watford midfielder taking charge of the Blues in July,” West Ham said at the time.

“Having joined the Academy of Football as an U10s player, Longelo made his senior debut for West Ham United in the Carabao Cup in September 2020, helping the Irons to a 5-1 win over Hull City.

“He would earn his full debut in a 1-0 UEFA Europa League Group H defeat by GNK Dinamo Zagreb at London Stadium in December 2021.

“The flying full-back played 18 times in Premier League 2 last season for the development side, scoring once and providing five assists.

“Everyone at West Ham United wishes Manny all the best for his loan spell with Birmingham City.”

With so many new signings and so many matches for West Ham this season, many fans could be forgiven for forgetting all about Longelo.

But video shows long lost loanee Longelo firing a reminder to West Ham with beauty for Brum.

Longelo showed his right foot can be just as good as his left when he cut in on his right foot and guided a fine finish home to put Birmingham 2-0 up against QPR on Friday night.

Hammers fans will be delighted to see Longelo doing well.

The West Ham loan star wheeled away in celebration. Well in fact several celebrations as he combined a host of them before collapsing on his back exhausted from all the excitement.

It’s a lovely goal which shows just what Longelo is capable of. Whether he will be back doing that in a West Ham shirt in the medium to long term remains to be seen.

But performances like this on loan certainly won’t hurt his chances. And Moyes will undoubtedly be watching.
