Man United shouldn’t have brought Cristiano Ronaldo back home, Jamie Carragher has claimed.

Last summer, Manchester United pulled off something that many of us thought would be impossible; bringing Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.

At the time, it truly was a surreal feeling. After all, this is the Red Devils’ prodigal son. The Portuguese star has gone on to be arguably the Greatest of All Time. We helped him along that road from the moment he signed for us as a teenager.

His goal on second debut was a glorious moment. The Old Trafford crowd haven’t had many special feelings like that over the last few years. Ronaldo, complete with iconic celebration, provided a genuine moment of joy.

Since then, the goals have been plentiful but the overall performances have arguably left plenty to be desired. I guess we should have expected that, given Ronaldo is now getting up there in age.

Well, one pundit, in the form of Jamie Carragher, believes United ‘made a mistake’ by bringing Ronaldo home. He says it’s a big error to sign the key star, who is one of the greatest players of his generation.

Check out what Carragher had to say in full here:

“United made a mistake re-signing Ronaldo last summer. It will be a bigger one keeping him next season. United scored 121 in all competitions in 2020-21, their highest tally for 14 years. That is because they were a more balanced, unified team than now.” Carragher wrote in his Telegraph column.

Now I see where Carragher is coming from, sort of. However, Ronaldo is the sort of player you build around and I’ve already lost count of how many times he’s bailed us out of bad performances due to an individual moment of brilliance.

Personally, I believe the problem lies with the rest of that dressing room. They don’t have that winning mentality, desire and drive that Ronaldo does – but I guess he’s an outlier in that regard because he sets the bar so incredibly high.

I sort of understand the fact that he doesn’t really fit the system that United currently employ, particularly in regards to the high-pressing game. But there’s no man I’d rather have when bearing down on goal or meeting a cross with his head.

There are certainly pros and cons to having Ronaldo in the side, but the positives far outweigh the negatives – in our opinion anyway.
