Harry Maguire has picked up a head injury, as England beat Iran 6-2.
Manchester United Football Club do not play now until the back end of December, with the World Cup now in full flow.
England began their campaign this afternoon, beating Iran 6-2 in emphatic fashion.
Two United players started in the match. Both Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire ended the game with an assist. Marcus Rashford came off the bench to score for the Three Lions, too.
Sadly, United’s club captain had to be substituted off in the second half, with the skipper dealing with a head injury. Now, England will be sweating on the fitness of one of Gareth Southgate’s key faces.
The United website confirmed the news immediately after the match, but it’s obviously far too soon to tell whether the issue is concussion or just a bang on the head.
If it’s concussion, this will mean Maguire will be in protocols for ten days. That would effectively end his participation in the group stages.
Maguire, who has only just returned from injury, needs all the minutes he can get right now. Obviously, starting in the last two group games would also help with confidence.
The good news for the Englishman is that Southgate trusts him wholeheartedly. Maguire has always played brilliantly for his country and you can never take that away from him.
It’d also be miles better for United if they have a confident, fully fit Maguire returning after the World Cup. Whatever some fans think of the Englishman, he’d be an excellent asset to have as a third or fourth-choice central defender.
Fingers crossed the problem isn’t anything too serious and he’s ready to play against the United States later in the week.
