Real Madrid could trigger a £33.5 million buy-back option to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilon

According to Todofichajes (h/t Shields Gazette), Real Madrid are looking to re-sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilon by triggering a £33.5 million buy-back option that the Spanish club had inserted in his contract.

The 25-year-old made his way through the ranks at Los Blancos but wasn’t able to pin down a regular place in the starting lineup. Reguilon was eventually sent on loan to Sevilla in the 2019-20 season following which he was sold to Spurs.

While the Spanish wing-back had a great start to life with the North Londoners, managerial changes and nagging injury issues have halted his progress to a certain extent at Spurs. Under Antonio Conte, the Spaniard has managed only 16 appearances, bagging two goals and one assist across all competitions for the Lilywhites.

Is ‘Regui- ‘gone’ from Spurs

The 25-year-old was an assured presence under Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo but his performances have blown hot and cold throughout his Spurs career. We have seen a sudden resurgence in Ryan Sessegnon ever since the arrival of the Italian manager.

That being said, we do have a lack of options and the former Fulham starlet’s bouts with inconsistency and tryst with injuries are too frequent for comfort. Reguilon’s departure could hence be perilous news for us.

Sergio Reguilon has had a mixed spell with Tottenham Hotspur so far

The La Liga champions would also be looking to add more reinforcements along the left flank to compete with Ferland Mendy and an ageing Marcelo. Reguilon who has come through the ranks with the Madrid club could hence find it easier to settle at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Whilst Tottenham are currently headed in a more positive direction under the tutelage of the former Juventus manager, having exceptional wing-backs is an integral part of his tactical prowess. Should the Spanish wing-back depart, his already limited option could get stretched even further.

In such a scenario the club may have to dip into the market to find suitable replacements. This is a task easier said than done, as a huge rebuild is already awaiting the North London club with Conte seeking close to eight signings in a major overhaul of the first team.

Sergio Reguilon has been good in parts and pieces, also managing to hold down a starting position at one point. His departure from Hotspur Way seems imminent at this point but we hope that the club will at least go all out to sign another left-back if they aren’t able to ward off Real Madrid who can be shrewd negotiators.
