Tottenham superstar weighs in on the club’s pursuit of a top-four finish

Tottenham Hotspur star Hugo Lloris delivers verdict on the race for Champions League qualification

Tottenham Hotspur star Hugo Lloris has delivered his verdict on the race to ensure qualification for the next season’s Champions League. His side are currently engaged in a closely contested pursuit, although the last two matchday results have put them firmly in contention to reach that objective.

Tottenham won their previous match in the Premier League against Aston Villa by a 4-0 scoreline. To their benefit, Arsenal lost 2-1 against Brighton and Hove Albion as they have been handed two successive defeats at a crucial stage in the season. The likes of West Ham United and Manchester United also failed to win even a point, giving Spurs the advantage right now.

Speaking in the post-match interview after the win vs Villa (h/t Football.London), Lloris has admitted that they knew about the Gunners and Man United losing their respective games ahead of the clash against Steven Gerrard’s side. However, the captain added that they must be at the top of their game, causing them to use those outcomes to gain a foothold in the top-four race.

“We were aware about the other results because at this moment of the season it’s very important to stay focused on ourselves and keep our mind very cold.”

Can Spurs finish the job?

We are currently fourth in the league table with 57 points from 31 matches, while our North London rivals trail us by three with a game in hand. However, we have a goal difference of 19 compared to their nine, which puts us in a far better situation following the last two matchdays.

West Ham and the Red Devils trail us by six points after the same number of matches have been played. That means should the current situation continue, our main competitor would be Mikel Arteta’s side for the remainder of the current campaign.

The North London derby would undoubtedly be a highly anticipated fixture in such a case. After all, that could shape how the table turns out to be by the time the season ends this summer. That being said, the current situation puts our future into our own hands, which is an ideal circumstance.

The players must now be ready and focused at all costs to ensure that they would not slip up in the remainder of this term. The Frenchman has conveyed the same, which is good to know as it indicates that they do realise the task at hand and what they need to do to achieve it.

The Tottenham squad must also be composed about the matter at all times, as it would give us control over different circumstances even when the odds are stacked against us. It remains to be seen whether the 35-year-old’s words will be paid heed to in the coming months ahead of this summer.

We do hope that is the case as CL qualification would be a great achievement for us when looking at the state Conte took over the managerial role.
