Tottenham show renewed interest in signing Tariq Lamptey

Tottenham have shown renewed interest in signing Brighton right back Tariq Lamptey, according to chief Manchester United writer, Samuel Luckhurst.

Antonio Conte has long been a supporter of Lamptey’s, who has shown incredible quality this season since returning from a long injury layoff. Originally it was Manchester United who were seen as the principle contenders to land the 21-year-old right back, but Luckhurst believes Spurs’ interest is currently more “concrete” than the northerners’.

It would cost Tottenham about £50 million to make this deal happen, and most believe Conte will not be able pry the talented youngster away from the Seagulls until the summer. With the Adama Traore transfer expected to be confirmed in the coming days, the importance of urgently landing Lamptey will decrease, albeit only slightly.

Signing Lamptey would provide Conte with numerous first-choice options at right wingback. It would also facilitate intense competition for the role, a fundamental requirement of any side that has ambitions of reaching elite European status. It would allow Conte to be more patient with Emerson Royal, while also having the flexibility of using Traore, when the transfer is confirmed, as an understudy to Lucas Moura.

Lamptey is under contract at the Seagulls until the end of the 2025 season and is currently worth, according to Transfermarkt.com, only £15 million.

Based on that minuscule evaluation, it feels like Spurs will have to severely overpay Brighton to get this deal across the line.

Though having a 21-year-old right back of his obvious potential and talent on the books could be crucial to Tottenham’s progression, he is still not the finished article and already suffered a major hamstring injury, which required surgery and kept him out of the lineup for six months last season.

That has to be a concern for any would-be suitor, especially considering his tender age.
