Tottenham Hotspur one of 17 clubs on scouting mission at FC Porto vs Braga after David Carmo links in May
According to Portuguese outlet A Bola (h/t Express), Tottenham Hotspur were one of 17 clubs on a scouting mission at FC Porto’s latest league match against Braga on Friday night.
Chelsea were another club present there after being linked with Mehdi Taremi this summer. Spurs, meanwhile, tried to pursue a move for 23-year-old centre-back David Carmo before he moved from Braga to the Dragons this summer.
Spurs would arguably be eager to add a centre-back to their ranks. Signing Clement Lenglet on a loan deal from Barcelona showed that manager Antonio Conte was worried about his defence’s depth going into the new season.
Japhet Tanganga and Davinson Sanchez aren’t regular starters meanwhile Joe Rodon, after an extended spell without regular starts under multiple managers at the club, left on loan to join Stade Rennais in Ligue 1.
Porto have produced some of Europe’s finest footballing talents, and Spurs have themselves shopped from the Estadio Dragao in the past, but that was way back when we signed Helder Postiga and Pedro Mendes in the summer of 2003 and 2004 respectively.
Conte, Daniel Levy, and Fabio Paratici would arguably be happy with how things went this summer. We did not lose any of our top players to another big team and strengthened in multiple positions.
However, a centre-back that can really lead the line and be a regular starter for us week in, week out looks like the only urgent need that we have. That, and perhaps thinking about who succeeds 35-year-old Hugo Lloris in goal in the near future.
Spurs have another Portuguese club they would have been keeping eye on this season, but for different reasons perhaps. Sporting CP stole a late win against us in the UEFA Champions League group stages last month.
