Tottenham in Pole Position to Sign Middlesbrough Right Back

Tottenham have Middlesbrough right back Djed Spence in their crosshairs and are the most likely destination for the 21-year-old.

Arsenal are the other main player in the pursuit of the right back who helped Nottingham Forest gain promotion into the Premier League.

The transfer window opens on Friday and there’s increasing optimism regarding the likelihood of Spence signing for Tottenham. The club’s Champions League berth is said to be one of the factors that will tip the balance in Spurs’ favour.

We’ll find out a lot more in the coming days, as this deal won’t be delayed if the chips fall into place. It will cost Tottenham about £15 million to pry him away from Middlesbrough, who will use the funds to reinvest on other transfer targets.

Spence made 42 appearances during the 2021-22 campaign, 39 of which on loan with Nottingham Forest. He cracked the starting 11 87 percent of the time and was an integral component in Forest’s storied campaign that saw them historically promoted into the top flight.

He only scored twice and added five assists. Despite those tepid numbers, Spence has boundless potential and is already good enough to contribute to Tottenham’s senior team. Of course he would be a squad player from the onset of his tenure in north London.

However, learning under Antonio Conte and Ivan Perisic will fast track his development, ensuring he competes for a first-team in place in relatively short order.

Anticipation is building as most pundits and reputable news outlets believe this prospective deal is a matter of when, not if. And if it comes to fruition, the deal should be pushed over the line in the coming weeks, ensuring Spence would have a full pre-season to train with Conte and get up to speed on club happenings.

It’s another one to keep a close eye on, but all signs point to Spence signing on the dotted line.
