After being on the verge of signing Micky van de Ven, Tottenham is now in danger of losing their grasp on the Wolfsburg centre-back, according to the Standard.

We’ve all been waiting with bated breath, wondering why Fabrizio Romano or another transfer guru hasn’t announced the signing of van de Ven.

For over a week, Tottenham supporters have been told the deal is almost done and that it would be announced imminently. We’re still waiting, and now we may know why. Not to sound too pessimistic, but it’s never promising when Liverpool decides to prioritize a player Spurs are keen on.

Liverpool was always lurking in the shadows, as the Reds do so proficiently. But now it appears Jurgen Klopp’s side is doing its utmost to hijack the Tottenham deal, which was in advanced stages of negotiation.

Losing van de Ven, while Tottenham never officially had him, would represent a devastating defeat. Spurs still haven’t made an official bid for Edmond Tapsoba, the club’s other primary centre-back option.

So where does this leave Tottenham? Potentially out in the cold where centre-back reinforcements are concerned.

There is some good news for Tottenham, as David Lynch’s article yesterday contradicts the Standard’s Thursday article. Lynch is adamant on the fact that Liverpool will not compete with Tottenham to sign van de Ven, promising news for Spurs supporters.

At this point, both articles are speculative, with no official sources confirming either opinion. Liverpool’s interest, however, was apparent earlier in the transfer window, and it could be causing the delay in van de Ven’s prospective Tottenham signing.

Leaving for Australia without a new centre-back is almost assured now, as Tottenham hops on the plane bound for Perth on Friday.

With absolutely no progress where Tapsoba is concerned and the deal for van de Ven uncertain, Tottenham supporters will wonder what the club has to do to strengthen the spine of its team, a crucial element for the club entering the 2023-24 campaign.

It would help if Tottenham would submit an opening bid for Tapsoba.

Aside from that non-development, The Standard believes Tottenham is interested in 20-year-old Chelsea up-and-comer Levi Colwill, who seeks assurances from Chelseas about obtaining more playing team with the senior team.

Brighton’s recent £40 million bid for Colwill was rejected, so the Seagulls will turn its focus to another, more affordable option.

Tottenham is monitoring the Colwill situation, but it’s improbable the club will be able to lure him away from a primary Premier League rival. Even if they do, Colwill is not ready to take on the responsibility of being a Premier League first-choice centre-back.

So, for now, Tottenham supporters must continue their agonizing wait, hoping van de Ven signs on the dotted line, thereby confirming Lynch’s stance and sending Tottenham supporters into a state of elated delirium.
