Tottenham Hotspur interested in French goalkeeper Alban Lafont

According to Media Foot (h/t Football. London), Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing French goalkeeper Alban Lafont from FC Nantes as a replacement for Hugo Lloris.

Spurs are on the lookout for a keeper who can replace our captain next season. Lloris has had a torrid time at N17 this season and has really struggled. He looked every bit of his 36 years right now and does not seem to have much time left at the top.

Despite playing in a position where players tend to peak only in their 30s, it looks like the crests in Hugo Lloris’ career graph are over. Right now, he is going through one of the biggest troughs of his career.

There is absolutely no doubt that the Tottenham leader will improve and get better than he is right now. However, he does not seem like he will reach his highest level anymore and the Spurs would be better off replacing him.

Replacing a talisman-like Lloris will not be easy. We need a goalkeeper who can come in and take over almost immediately. There are quite a few names that Tottenham are exploring and one such name is Alban Lafont.

Football purists have a thing for like-for-like replacements. There is almost an obsession between spotting similarities amongst players when signing replacements and a Frenchman replacing Lloris in goal sounds exciting.

It is not without credit to Lafont though. The 23-year-old French goalie who plays for FC Nantes is one of the most exciting young shot-stoppers coming through. He has been very impressive.

Didier Deschamps even took him in the squad to Qatar for the World Cup, one which France eventually lost to Argentina. Lafont is yet to win a cap for his national team though and a move to a big league is likely to act as a catalyst for the same.

We still do not know how well Lafont can perform in the Premier League. However, we will never know unless he is given a chance. For now, the signs are promising and let’s see if he is the chosen one to replace his former national team captain at N17.
