Paul Robinson green-lights Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni

Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson has backed Spurs’ pursuit of Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni.

The Lilywhites have been linked with the Italy international for a while and according to a report from the Sun earlier this month, they are still keeping tabs on him. Robinson believes he is the kind of player Spurs need to be targeting now.

He exclusively told Football Insider:

“That is the type of signing Spurs need to make if they want to go onto the next level. They need to get that level of player now. That is what Conte is hinting at in his press conferences when he says he needs two or three transfer windows.”

He also believes that manager Antonio Conte needs further backing in the transfer windows to turn Tottenham into a title-winning side. He added:

“Conte needs to be given the time and the funds to turn Spurs into a side who challenge consistently at the top of the table.”

Conte was backed well this summer. We signed Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Fraser Forster, and Ivan Perisic among other players.

But if we ask ourselves honestly, and just look at the signings we made on paper, which of these players instantly strengthen our starting XI? Perhaps only Perisic.

Richarlison is brilliant, but he adds depth to the team rather than quality. Bissouma has completely failed to displace either Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg or Rodrigo Bentancur, while Clement Lenglet’s loan move has been disappointing.

Djed Spence seems to get a few minutes once every blue moon, while Destiny Udogie has been loaned back to Udinese for a season. Forster is Hugo Lloris’ backup and not his successor.

It’s time to now focus on quality rather than quantity. Bastoni is an elite defender and would certainly slot straight into our starting XI.
