It was another golden day for Team GB at Tokyo 2020 as the swimmers made history and Jonny Brownlee finally got his hands on a gold medal.
Adam Peaty, James Guy, Kathleen Dawson and Anna Hopkin secured gold at world record pace in the 4x100m medley relay to make it four golds, two silvers and a bronze in the pool for Team GB.
It’s their joint-best medal haul at an Olympic games, matching the tally in 1908 – and there could be more to come on Sunday as Peaty eyes a third gold of the Games.
“I hope this team and the rest of British Swimming get the recognition and the respect that they deserve because it’s been f****** hard,” said Peaty, who retained his men’s 100m breaststroke title earlier this week.
But for Brownlee, his gold in the triathlon mixed relay – alongside Jess Learmonth, Georgia Taylor-Brown and Alex Yee – marked the end of a long wait.
Having bagged bronze at London 2012 and silver at Rio 2016 after finishing behind brother Alistair, Jonny left it until his last Olympic race to win a first gold medal.
“The Olympics, I’ve completed it,” said an excited Brownlee to the BBC immediately afterwards.
The 31-year-old added: “It’s about time. I keep on trying to get gold medals, Alistair’s won two so far, and to go home with one and get towards matching him is super special.
“And it’s also the first ever (Olympic) mixed team relay in triathlon so we’ve made history in that. I feel like I’ve been a part of a lot of history in my career and that’s just another one. It’s capped off my Olympic career amazingly.”
