It’s not clear if Daniel Ek was ever truly serious about trying to buy Arsenal but his company are set to sign a three-year deal with Barcelona that will see Spotify sponsor their men’s and women’s teams, as well as the iconic Camp Nou.

Barcelona are currently sponsored by Rakuten, and secondary sponsor Beko, whose deals both expire in the summer.

They have a number of offers on the table, including one said to be the largest shirt sponsorship offer in football history. VeganNation and their Green Coin, as well as other firms, mainly to do with cryptocurrencies, were also in the mix.

Spotify, however, are expected to win out with the deal being announced this week.

Spotify Joe Rogan decision shows Daniel Ek is no Arsenal saviour

“The ambition is to return the club to its former glory,” Ek said back in April about buying Arsenal, echoing comments he made on CNBC as he set a narrative that went very quiet very quickly.

“Arsenal is the club I have supported since I was eight years old. So, it’s 30 years now in the making.

“The answer is quite simple: I am a fan first and foremost. I want to create more fan involvement and I want to set a standard and a vision that brings this club back to glory.

“If I can make that happen, then great. That’s what I’m trying to accomplish. It’s too early to say how likely I am to succeed in all of this, but I don’t think there’s been a better opportunity to succeed with this acquisition than at any time in the past 10 years.

“And I don’t think there will be a better opportunity in the next five or 10 years either.”
