Scottish Premiership manager reveals intention to sign Spurs loanee on a permanent deal

Transfer News: Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou wants Tottenham Hotspur loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers on a permanent deal

Speaking ahead of the match against Dundee United (h/t Football Scotland), Ange Postecoglou reiterated his desire to convert the loan moves of Tottenham Hotspur defender Cameron Carter-Vickers and Benfica youngster Jota into permanent deals. The Australian manager believes that the prospect of playing in the UEFA Champions League could be a substantial boost in this quest.

The defensive duo has been a revelation for the Hoops this season. They have played an instrumental role in this campaign as Celtic sit on top of the table in the Scottish Premiership- finally looking like a team capable of reclaiming their spot on the perch from Rangers.

The Celts have managed to keep a tight ship this season which is largely down to the defensive prowess of the Spurs and Benfica loanee. The club could be set for a £40m windfall should they be able to secure Champions League qualification by winning the league title.

In conversation before the match against Dundee United (h/t Football.Scotland), Postecoglou spoke about Carter-Vickers as well as Jota. He insisted that the club and the players should be completely invested should any deal take place in the future.

“I’m sure Champions League football will help us keep them. But I’m also sure that it will be an attraction for others to come to our football club. This is a two-way thing. The player has to want to be here and we have to want them here. When you have that, I’m sure we’ll get a deal done.”

What’s in it for Tottenham Hotspur?

The North Londoners have had an oscillating season, to say the least. While there have been few positives ever since the arrival of Antonio Conte, their lack of consistency in results has left the fanbase in distress.

Their defensive fragility has been an issue for a while now with Eric Dier being the only experienced defender in what could be seen as a relatively young backline. The Italian has opted for the likes of Cristian Romero and Ben Davies in a three-man defensive formation but the results show that there is still a lot of room for improvement.

The Lilwyhites have crumbled under pressure on occasions and a sturdy centre-back could be the ideal acquisition. Cameron Carter-Vickers has struggled to make inroads into the senior squad at Tottenham but has really done well for the Scottish club this season.

He has put in mature performances and has held his own in Celtic’s backline. However, it is tough to say whether or not he will be able to recreate that same form should the club bring him back to Hotspur Way. Getting regular playing time could also be a big hassle with the North Londoners already possessing several senior defenders in their ranks.

While getting him back could add more depth to our central defence, the English centre-back has cemented his position at Parkhead and at 24, would prefer to have regular playing opportunities.

In such circumstances, letting him go for a suitable fee wouldn’t be a bad option. We need top-quality additions to our starting XI right now and with Conte currently here only until the summer of 2023, it is doubtful if we have the time to experiment in our starting XI with a player like Carter-Vickers.
