Tottenham Hotspur’s long-term stance on Djed Spence after loaning him to Stade Rennais
Djed Spence has left Tottenham Hotspur to join Stade Rennais on a loan spell until the end of the campaign.
Right-back was the position that saw a major overhaul in the last few days of the winter transfer window. Pedro Porro arrived from Sporting CP after lengthy and drawn-out negotiations with the Primeira Liga club.
The 23-year-old Spaniard is expected to be the club’s primary option down the right-hand side. Hence, with the former Manchester City full-back’s arrival, there was going to be a knock-on effect on the futures of our current right-backs.

As it turned out, Matt Doherty’s contract was terminated via mutual agreement. The 31-year-old Republic of Ireland international joined Atletico Madrid to provide cover for Nahuel Molina.
Spence a prospect for the future
Spence, meanwhile, was loaned to Stade Rennais. The Englishman’s loan move does not have an option or an obligation to buy, which shows that the Lilywhites may still have a plan for him.
Daniel Levy made sure there was no option to buy the 22-year-old despite interest from Premier League clubs in the former Middlesbrough right-back. This is according to the Athletic (Subscription Required), who claim that the club has plans for him in the long term.
Levy’s stance on Spence makes sense. He surely had a big role to play in the Englishman’s arrival last summer because manager Antonio Conte immediately made it clear that the player was a club signing, not his’.
Given his age and the money we spent on him just last year, it would be very foolish to take a permanent call on his future at Spurs already. It’s good that we will have him back in the summer, hopefully after he has seen some playing time in France.

Porro and Emerson Royal (24) are still young and Spence won’t have it easy anytime soon when he is back in north London. But there was a reason we spent money on him when we still had Emerson and Doherty on our books… let’s just hope he gets a chance to display his skills at Tottenham as well.
