Report: Tottenham Hotspur monitoring La Liga superstar as Hugo Lloris replacement but face one issue

Tottenham Hotspur could face one hurdle in signing Jan Oblak from Atletico Madrid as Hugo Lloris replacement

Tottenham Hotspur are monitoring Jan Oblak of Atletico Madrid as a potential replacement for Hugo Lloris, as per the Athletic (Subscription).

However, it is said that the Slovenia international’s wage at Atletico is ‘significant’. This could potentially cause problems for Spurs if they decide to focus their pursuit on just Oblak as Lloris’ replacement.

The France international is set to become a free agent at the end of the 2023-24 campaign. Moreover, the former Olympique Lyonnais man is now 35 and arguably in the last few years as a professional footballer.

He did have a brilliant game in our 2-0 loss against Manchester United earlier this month but was equally poor in Spurs’ 2-1 loss to Newcastle United in north London subsequently. This epitomises his form for us recently.

Jan Oblak to Spurs?

He has blown hot and cold over recent seasons and perhaps next season will be the ideal time to think about a replacement for the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner with France. The report doesn’t mention Oblak’s salary.

However, Marca claimed in June this year that Atleti were facing issues with their overloaded wage bill. They mentioned that Oblak, along with Antoine Griezmann and Koke were amongst the highest-paid players at the club.

Oblak is world-class. Anyone who has followed his career at Los Colchoneros and Slovenia knows he is arguably one of the best goalkeepers of this generation.

He is still in the prime years of his career and goalkeepers usually have a longer shelf life. Hence, this is a move that Spurs fans would be elated with if it comes to fruition.

However, it remains to be seen if Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici will want Spurs to onboard Oblak’s potential wage demands if the parties do sit on the negotiating table in the future.
