Raphael Varane has been named in the Squad of the Tournament, using only FIFA World Cup semi-finalists.
Manchester United had an initial sixteen representatives at the FIFA World Cup when the tournament kicked off a few weeks ago. Credit to all those lads, most of whom made it into the knockout stages.
We’re now down to the final two. The good news? United are guaranteed to bring a World Cup winner back to the club this weekend, ahead of a Carabao Cup game vs Burnley in six days’ time. Either Lisandro Martinez or Raphael Varane will be lifting the trophy.
Ahead of the final, CIES Football have drawn up their best XVIII, using players who reached the semi-final. I’m pleased to report one United star made the cut after his impressive performances; Varane.
Check out CIES Football’s best XVIII here:
I genuinely believe that, if he’d have started every game, Martinez would have walked into this team alongside his United teammate. The Argentine has been just as impressive as Varane – It’s just weird he has consistently dipped in and out of the side…
Varane, though. What a player! The Frenchman picked up that serious-looking injury against Chelsea just a couple of months ago. He’s now close to lifting his second World Cup crown. Incredible stuff.
In terms of overall quality and performances, there haven’t been many more than Varane. He’s played at a super high level all tournament. He’s probably been the best centre-half in the tournament. That deserves immense praise.
Hopefully, Varane’s injury woes are now behind him and he can partake fully in the second half of the domestic season for United. Alongside his mate Martinez!
