Raphael Varane bosses it as France win 2-0 vs Austria

Raphael Varane enjoyed a top game for France, as they won 2-0 vs Austria last night.

Manchester United Football Club are in the middle of a two-week hiatus due to international football, with the Red Devils returning with a bang against Manchester City in the first derby of the campaign.

For the first time in what feels like ages, the Red Devils go into that match against City with some sort of decent form under their belts. This game will still be a real struggle, though.

Suddenly, United are building the foundations from a solid backline. The combination of the newly-acquired Lisandro Martinez and the fit again Raphael Varane.

The Frenchman was somewhat disappointing during his debut season, spending so long out on the treatment table meaning he never found any consistency.

However, the ex-Real Madrid man is back to his best; for club and country.

The United star bossed it for France last night, as they beat Austria 2-0, once again, courtesy of a solid defence. During the game, Varane completed 100% of his long-balls with a 93% pass accuracy. He also made four clearances and won all three of his aerial duels. A truly dominant display from a man back at his best. He also captained his side, too.

Check out the stats as Varane bossed it for France vs Austria last night:

Without wanting to throw shade on anyone, it also helps when you’ve got a centre-back partner next to you who you trust wholeheartedly. There’s a genuine bond and connection between Martinez and Varane, with the pair complementing each other nicely.

I guess right now all we can hope for is a fully fit Varane for the course of the season. Some of that falls on the shoulders of Erik ten Hag, who has to understand exactly when the Frenchman needs to be rested for a game or two.

Hopefully, Varane can continue with his brilliant form against Manchester City. Though stopping Erling Haaland will not be easy…
