Pablo Fornals makes very simple comment that proves David Moyes made a big mistake by not signing anyone in January.

The Hammers were riding high at the turn of the year last season, with a finish inside the top four a very real prospect for us.

The problem that West Ham had though was that David Moyes kept playing the same starting XI, week in week out.

Players like Pablo Fornals, Tomas Soucek, Michail Antonio and Vladimir Coufal began to realise that they were untouchable and they would be guaranteed to start every single week.

David Moyes was, and still is, a big fan of Pablo Fornals. So the Spaniard was used at every opportunity.

The 26-year-old got worse as the season went on, with exhaustion and complacency clearly playing a big role in his dip in form.

Fornals has now been dropped from the Spain squad as a result of his poor run of form.

As the ex-Villarreal man’s form tailed off, so did half a dozen of his teammates’. And as a result, the Hammers ended up finishing in seventh place in the Premier League table.

We were also knocked out of the Europa League at the semi-final stage by Eintracht Frankfurt.

Pablo Fornals hits nail on the head why David Moyes should have strengthened mid-season

The Spaniard was speaking to the club’s official website about the healthy competition now present at the London Stadium:

This is not Pablo Fornals’ team; this is West Ham United. Pablo is just one player on this team. It’s about competition, and I think competition is going to improve everyone. We made some really good signings in the summer. They have given different points and different styles to the team. And people who have been here for more time have to show everyone they deserve to start now.

What the Spaniard said there has proven why Moyes was wrong to keep his powder dry for the summer, rather than bring in at least one player.

In my opinion, the signing of another striker – even one on loan, would have given us enough to finish inside the top six last season and maybe go all the way in the Europa League.

Despite what people say, there were strikers out there available – Wout Weghorst, Antoine Semenyo and Ben Brereton Diaz to name a few.

Any of them could have come in and provided some real competition for Michail Antonio.

Alas, Moyes chose not to sign anyone though. Now I get that there is an argument that had the Scot signed someone in January, perhaps we wouldn’t have got one of the summer signings.

Pablo Fornals highlights David Moyes mistake

The thing is, our need for a new face in the winter was so urgent and painfully obvious to see that not signing anyone was actually negligent in my book.

The entire West Ham squad was pushed to the limit both mentally and physically last season and as a result, every single player’s performance levels dropped during there final third of the campaign.

The moment was there and available for Moyes to use as well – he said so himself on numerous occasions.

And Pablo Fornals has proven just how much West Ham might have improved during the second-half of last season, had David Moyes signed one or two players in January.
