Newcastle United are looking at potentially making a move to bring in Dean Henderson.

Manchester United’s goalkeeper conundrum has us all constantly scratching our heads. Dean Henderson and David de Gea were locked in a serious battle last season, with both vying for the number one jersey.

In the end, it was De Gea who’d come out on top while Henderson struggled with injury and Covid-19. The Spaniard has been the firm favourite all campaign long, despite making some mistakes of his own (particularly in terms of distribution).

There’s only so long a top keeper like Henderson will remain patient. This will be his second season back at Old Trafford since a successful loan spell at Sheffield United. He’s probably not played anywhere near as much as he’d have liked.

Now, United ‘will make’ a decision about Hendo’s future this summer, with the star only making three appearances across all competitions – and not featuring once in the Premier League.

That claim comes from Fabrizio Romano, who states that Newcastle United are interested in bringing in Hendo – and have been since January. On top of that, the Italian transfer guru adds that Henderson wants to play as a starter next term.

I’ll start by saying I’m surprised it’s only a loan move in the offing. I genuinely thought Henderson would be pushing for a permanent transfer at this point – though I guess we’re still unsure as to who the new United manager will be. Perhaps that will give Henderson another chance?

At this stage in his career, Henderson has learned all he can from training at United. He can only progress by starting matches week-in-week-out and he’s not getting that chance at Old Trafford as things stand.

I’d love it if United can somehow satisfy Hendo with a loan move next season, before looking at making him the undisputed number one choice in just over twelve months’ time. That’s easier said than done, mind, as at that stage, United could be well end up losing the Englishman on a free transfer.
