Any proposed Man United move for Marko Arnautovic was scuppered due to fan backlash, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed.

During the summer transfer window, Manchester United were linked with what feels like every single name under the sun. Erik ten Hag’s side had a panicked week where the Old Trafford club were putting feelers out for several footballers.

Amongst them was Marko Arnautovic. The ex-Stoke City and West Ham United forward is currently playing for Bologna, with Ten Hag viewing the Austrian as someone who could come in and do a job.

From a purely footballing standpoint, Arnautovic is someone who has experience aplenty in the Premier League. He actually enjoyed some success with both Stoke and West Ham.

However, the fans’ dug up some old history about Arnautovic from a political standpoint, with the striker saying some unsavoury things about Albania. Immediately, that turned everyone off…

Now, the usually-reliable Fabrizio Romano had had his say on the situation, claiming that United’s summer move for the attacker collapsed as the fans were ‘absolutely crazy’ about any move for the Austrian.

Check out what Fabrizio Romano said about any Man United move for Marko Arnautovic here:

“And, the Marko Arnautovic deal collapses because the fans were absolutely crazy about that story, so the deal collapsed.” Fabrizio Romano said exclusively on his YouTube channel.

This was instantly one of those deals that became more about politics than football – but rightly so. It’s reassuring to hear that United fans (and football supporters in general) still have morals and principles that are more important than what someone offers when they step out on the pitch.

Arnautovic is someone who isn’t afraid to speak his mind, while that’s not necessarily the sort of player you want to bring into a dressing room that are trying to turn their fortunes around.

Again, this goes to show that fan power is still alive and well. Supporters can still voice their opinion and have that viewpoint taken on board by the club. I don’t doubt that if the masses didn’t speak up, then Arnautovic may well already be at the club.

I guess in the end, it worked out alright as Antony became available for transfer late on in the window. The Brazil international has certainly started well!
