Manuel Lanzini has just said something that proves West Ham United boss David Moyes genuinely wants to change.

Moyes returned to the London Stadium for a second stint in charge of West Ham in December 2019.

He kept the Hammers up, and then took the Premier League by storm in the 2020/21 season with an exciting brand of counter-attacking football.

West Ham finished 6th that season, and climbed as high as third in the table in the following campaign by November 2021.

After that period though, things have gone south. The Hammers ended up just scraping a seventh placed finish, and as well all know, this season has been a complete and utter disaster so far.

West Ham have been found out it seems. Other teams have wised up to Moyes’s system and tactics.

The Scot has insisted on multiple occasions that he wants to change his team’s playing style into more of a possession-based one, hence why he signed the type of players he did in the summer:

The truth is we don’t want to just play on the break. We want you to control possession and dominate the game and we work towards that.

There have been question marks over that though, with the same old turgid football being rolled out week in week out from the Hammers.

It seems as though there is real truth to Moyes’s comments regarding his intentions to switch things up though…

The Hammers were fairly impressive during their 3-1 win over Udinese on Saturday.

And Lanzini spoke to WHUFC.com after the game about he and his teammates’ desire to play a more attractive and attacking brand of football:

Of course, we want to play like this. We work for this, to create chances, to play well and to have the ball because that’s important for the team, because when we have the ball we will have more chances to win the game. In this game, we played well, and we deserved to win.

It’s good to get the confirmation from one of the players that the intent to play better football all-round is there at the very least.

Moyes has had to bed in eight new players as well, and that can sometimes be forgotten.

I want to make this very clear – I don’t think Moyes is the man to take us forward. I’m open to being proved wrong though.

And the comments from West Ham ace Manuel Lanzini have made me feel slightly better about David Moyes today. The proof will be in the pudding though. If results and performances don’t improve quickly, the Scot will not last long at the London Stadium.
