Manchester United have made a fresh £76 million for Ajax winger Antony, according to De Telegraaf’s Mike Verweij.
The Red Devils are determined to sign the Brazil international before the transfer deadline, but they are yet to convince the Eredivisie outfit to sanction his sale.
United have no choice but to meet Ajax’s transfer demands
United have placed their emphasis on landing Antony before the September 1 deadline, but they are not helping themselves by trying to haggle over the price tag.
It has been quite clear for a number of weeks that Ajax want £85m for Antony, and the Red Devils have no choice but to pay the fee to finalise the potential transfer.
Their latest proposal has not changed Ajax’s stance on the player, and we won’t be surprised if the club come up with a fresh bid to meet the reported asking price.
United could have signed Antony for much less in early June, but the decision to delay negotiations should see them pay over the odds to sign the Sao Paulo graduate.
Despite the huge outlay, the Brazilian would be a quality acquisition for United. He has managed an impressive 46 goal contributions from just 82 appearances for Ajax.
Erik ten Hag knows him well after working with him at the Dutch champions for the past two years. The 52-year-old tactician will be aiming to get Antony playing even better.
The Brazilian is a specialist right-winger. He has superb pace, dribbling ability and knack for finding key passes. He could make a quick impact working under a familiar tactical system.
