Manchester United are the leading Premier League club interested in signing Napoli striker Victor Osimhen this summer, Tuttosport claims.

The Red Devils are expected to bolster their strike force in the next transfer window. Interim boss Ralf Rangnick has confirmed that the club will search for a young striker to replace Edinson Cavani.

Amidst this, they have been linked with several strikers including Benfica’s Darwin Nunez. It is now reported that Osimhen could be a potential summer transfer candidate.

According to today’s edition of Tuttosport (via Calcionapoli24), Osimhen is attracting plenty of transfer interest from the Premier League, but primarily from the Red Devils.

Napoli are not actively looking to sell Osimhen, but will sanction his exit if they receive at least £83.5 million. Should he leave, Sassuolo’s Gianluca Scamacca could replace him.

Our view:

Cristiano Ronaldo has impressed on his homecoming this term with 18 goals, but he has not received much support from the other strikers in the first-team squad.

Mason Greenwood (indefinitely suspended), Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial (away on loan) have netted just 14 goals between themselves.

To compete for silverware, United need at least two genuine goalscorers in their ranks. The hierarchy may look for a solution when the transfer window reopens.

Osimhen had a relatively average debut campaign at Napoli amid injuries. The Nigeria international bagged just 10 goals and three assists from 30 appearances.

This season, he has been disrupted again by a cheekbone fracture, but has fared much better with 15 goals and four assists from 25 appearances for the Naples outfit.

The 23-year-old definitely has the potential to become a potent goalscorer if he stays unscathed, but the main question lies whether United are prepared to spend big.

Napoli bought Osimhen for £67.5m. They may want a small profit from his sale. Owner Aurelio de Laurentiis has a history of turning down bids below the price tag.

A summer deal may depend on United’s priorities. With the huge outlay required, they could lean towards pursuing a striker with Premier League experience instead.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane could be available for just over £100m, particularly if he has no plans of renewing his contract which expires in the summer of 2024.

Kane will be 29 by the start of next season, but remains in the prime of his career. Despite a slow start, he has bagged 22 goals and six assists from 41 outings this term.
