Manchester United are one of the best positioned clubs to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez this summer, Portuguese outlet Record (today’s edition, page 3) claims.

The Red Devils are expected to strengthen their strikeforce this summer with Edinson Cavani set to leave while Marcus Rashford has been far from impressive in recent months.

There has been an over-reliance on Cristiano Ronaldo since his comeback, but it is also unclear whether the Portuguese will stay without Champions League football next term.

Amidst this, Record claims that United are one of the best placed teams to sign Nunez this summer as incoming boss Erik ten Hag prepares for the renewal of the club’s attack.

Our view:

Nunez had a good debut season with Benfica last term, bagging 14 goals and 12 assists from 44 outings. Despite this, there was not much interest as he underwent a knee surgery.

Clubs were wary of spending big on his services, but the operation has made him look a better player. He has been more quicker and agile while making the most of his chances on goal.

The Uruguayan has bagged a stunning 34 goals and four assists from 40 outings this campaign. There are no surprises that he is being linked with a high-profile departure this summer.

Ten Hag could ideally look to pursue a young striker with immense potential. Nunez could perfectly fit the bill, and has proved himself on the biggest stage in the Champions League.

With goals against Ajax, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Liverpool this term, the 22-year-old has shown that he can stand out and make himself counted on the big occasions for Benfica.

While he would be an excellent acquisition for United, there could be multiple stumbling blocks in the pursuit. The lack of Champions League football could be a potential blow.

Meanwhile, Benfica could demand a significant fee for their prized asset amid his exceptional progress. The Portuguese heavyweights are eyeing in excess of €100 million for his services.
