Manchester United are interested in signing Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski ahead of the summer, Bild reporter Tobi Altschaffl claims.

Lewandowski has been in outstanding form for the German champions this term, bagging 42 goals from 35 appearances across all competitions.

Despite this, there has been speculation over his future at the Bavarian giants, with his current deal expiring at the end of next season.

Speaking on the Bayern Insider podcast, Altschaffl has said that there is interest from the Red Devils, but that does not mean they will sign him.

His agent Pini Zahavi has been in contact with multiple clubs. The Red Devils are willing to sign Lewandowski if he decides to end his long-term association with Bayern.

While the Pole is in the form of his life, he appears ‘unhappy’ with the lack of progress in contract talks. This could pave the way for a surprise exit during the summer.

He said: “I can say with certainty that they are interested.

“They have been interested in Lewandowski before, but that doesn’t mean that he will sign for United in the next few weeks. It’s not like that.

“Pini Zahavi is exchanging with many teams. United have said that they would be interested if a situation arose that he could leave Munich.

“We know from the reporting of the last few days and weeks apparently that anything is possible for now. He is unhappy.”

Our view:

Lewandowski has already turned 33, but has shown no signs of slowing down. He has only become better with age and is undoubtedly the best player in the world at the moment.

His arrival at Old Trafford would transform United’s fortunes in front of goal. The striker could be a key catalyst towards the club challenging for the league title.

However, this seems a long probability at the moment. While there is speculation, Lewandowski has by no means hinted that he would be prepared to leave Bayern soon.

Bayern are unlikely to part ways with the £45 million-rated star in the near future. If there is a contract stand-off, they may be more inclined to keep him until the end of his current deal.

While Bild generally have good information on the situation at Bayern, the story could be agent-driven.

Zahavi could be mentioning United’s name as a means for an improved contract for the striker.

A similar scenario happened with Kingsley Coman recently. The Frenchman, who is also represented by Zahavi, was touted for a move to the Red Devils before he signed a new bumper deal in January.

We can rule out any future move to Old Trafford for Lewandowski. If there is a real possibility this summer, United may first need to qualify for the Champions League to give themselves a chance of luring him.
