Manchester United have a genuine and growing interest in Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans, CBS Sports’ Ben Jacobs claims.
The Red Devils recently agreed a deal with Barcelona for midfielder Frenkie de Jong, but the 25-year-old has not accepted personal terms.
While De Jong wants Barcelona to repay his deferred wages, it has also emerged that he is not keen on moving to Old Trafford this summer.
Amidst this, Jacobs reports that there is ‘genuine’ and ‘growing’ interest in Tielemans, who is a ‘far cheaper and less complicated’ option than De Jong.
Earlier this year, Tielemans indicated to Ralf Rangnick that he was not keen on joining United, but Erik ten Hag has been fancied to revisit.
Meanwhile, Arsenal have been Tielemans’ preferred destination, but they are yet to make any kind of approach to sign him this summer.
United could go for Tielemans if De Jong refuses to change stance
De Jong has been Ten Hag’s priority target for the past two months, but the midfielder continues to resist the prospect of leaving Barcelona this summer.
The Dutchman is said to be prioritising Champions League football, and it has been reported today that he could prefer a move to Chelsea over the Red Devils.
United are still not giving up on De Jong due to Ten Hag’s insistence, and it may come to a point where they may need to focus on alternative transfer targets.
In such a case, Tielemans would be a quality acquisition for the club. He has vast Premier League experience and would suit Ten Hag with his tireless work rate.
Tielemans does not possess the passing efficiency of De Jong, but is strong with his tackling. He is also more useful in the final third with goal involvements.
The Belgium international contributed six goals and four assists in the league last term, which was the same tally from 2020/21. He made nine goal contributions in 2019/2020.
The former Monaco star can be considered as a solid alternative to De Jong. He can play anywhere in midfield, but is most comfortable from the central position.
Tielemans has under 12 months left on his contract, but the Foxes are said to be eyeing at least £30 million. This has put off Arsenal from a move, but United should easily afford that if they genuinely want to sign him.
