Manchester United will be in the market to sign a new midfielder this summer, with Kalvin Phillips seemingly still on the list.

Paul Pogba is leaving Manchester United this summer. Nemanja Matic, too. Both have become mainstays within our match day squad over the last few years. Both will need to be replaced.

The incoming Erik ten Hag will have an ideology and playing style in mind. No doubt he’s watched our midfield struggle to get any sort of grip on the football match. No doubt he’s looking to address that key issue.

Several names have been linked, including Frenkie de Jong. Another the Old Trafford club have been credited with interest in recently is Kalvin Phillips.

Once again, the Leeds United midfielder is being talked up as a potential Erik ten Hag target. The claim comes from the Manchester Evening News.

In Samuel Luckhurst’s detailed article about United targets this summer, Phillips’ name gets another mention.

Apparently, United are ‘working on’ a deal to sign the 26-year-old central midfielder from their fierce rivals this summer.

It’s added that Phillips will ‘almost certainly’ be a much cheaper alternative than another transfer target, Declan Rice. That’s due to Leeds United being in serious danger of being relegated this summer.

With so much work to undertake in one window, and only so much money to go around, it does make sense for United to stretch that budget as far as possible, rather than spending a huge amount on one marquee addition.

Phillips is someone who could slot straight into our starting line-up in place of the outbound Matic, and do just as good a job as his predecessor. Phillips is also far more mobile, which is exactly what’s needed in Ten Hag’s system.

If Leeds are relegated, around £30million should be enough to get the transfer done. For a player who is approaching his prime, this is absolutely a deal worth pursuing as soon as Leeds’ relegation is confirmed.

The one stumbling block could be Phillips’ love for Leeds United Football Club. Would he really move to their fiercest rivals in the same summer they drop down a division? I guess money talks at the end of the day. If our financial package is right then maybe we can persuade the England international to make the switch…

Would a Man United move for Kalvin Phillips make sense? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
