Man United suffer setback in Frenkie de Jong pursuit – Old Trafford Faithful

Man United have been hit with some major disappointment, with Frenkie de Jong preferring to stay at FC Barcelona.

For the last few weeks, Manchester United have been pretty heavily linked with a move to bring in Frenkie de Jong from FC Barcelona. We’ve been covering all the major updates here at Old Trafford Faithful.

Well, the chase of De Jong has probably just been ended. The story comes from ESPN, quoting the player himself, who admits he’d prefer to stay at FC Barcelona.

This is a blow for United in pursuit of arguably their top transfer target so far, though if the player doesn’t want to leave his current club, then so be it.

Despite the fact that Erik ten Hag is ‘keen’ on bringing his countryman to Old Trafford, there’s very little the manager can do in terms of persuading De Jong to make the move.

It’s also worth noting that the ball may not even be in De Jong’s court. Barca ‘may yet’ offload De Jong as the club continue to suffer with financial difficulties. Though surely the club have other players they could move on?

If De Jong isn’t willing to make the move this summer, instead preferring to stay at Barcelona to fight for his place, this could be a transfer worth revisiting next summer.

If the Dutchman remains out of favour, coupled with United (hopefully) having Champions League football on offer in twelve months’ time, there could still be a chance of this one happening – just not this time around.

Perhaps this was just posturing from De Jong in order to force Barca into either playing him more or paying him more. Well, the fact that he’s publically admitted he’d like to remain in Catalonia leads me to believe that the former Ajax man has been given some assurances.

Who should Man United look at signing in the midfield? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
