Man United set to ‘push ahead’ with fresh David de Gea contract talks – Old Trafford Faithful

Man United are ready to sit down with David de Gea for fresh contract talks.

This season has been a mess. The sooner it’s complete, the better for all involved with Manchester United Football Club.

A new manager is in place ahead of the 2022/23 season. Erik ten Hag has a massive job on his hands, though I firmly believe he can do it if given the proper tools for the job. That’s by no means a given…

Ahead of the summer transfer window, United are already working behind the scenes in order to give Ten Hag the best chance at success.

According to 90min.com, that includes handing David de Gea a fresh deal.

Their report claims United are ‘set to push ahead’ contract talks with the 31-year-old following the appointment of Ten Hag as manager.

It’s claimed in a season full of disappointments, De Gea has been the one positive, with the Spaniard making some sublime saves week-in-week-out.

Although De Gea has lost his place as Spain’s number one, there’s every chance he’ll win the United Player of the Year award for the fifth time in nine seasons.

De Gea’s current deal expires in 2023, with the club holding the option for another campaign if they choose. However, it looks as though United want to give him longer terms…

That’s because United see De Gea as a ‘stabilising element’ within the squad and they feel it’s vital he stays during this summer of major upheaval. De Gea is also one of the players who views Ten Hag’s appointment as a ‘positive’.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to see De Gea stay given his current form. But again, I’m unsure why we’re handing him a new contract so early on. He still technically has two more seasons to run and who knows whether Ten Hag wants to work with De Gea? Particularly as his major flaw comes with distributing the ball, when Ten Hag likes his goalies to pass out from the back…
