Man United have seemingly identified Manuel Akanji as someone who can bolster their defence.

Despite massive investment in the playing squad, this Manchester United side still has holes all over the field. Those gaps are only going to increase this summer, particularly with Paul Pogba set to depart on a free.

Factor in several unhappy players due to a lack of Champions League football next season and we’re having serious issues.

The best way to overcome this is to get back to square one. Sure, this may be a long process but United have to lay the foundations and build a side with the long-term in mind rather than looking at quick fixes.

Well, one man who the club are apparently looking at is Borussia Dortmund’s Manuel Akanji. The story comes from Bild, with the transfer coming via CaughtOffside.

Apparently, United have sent a big contract offer to the 26-year-old, who could almost double his wages with a Reds switch.

As things stand, Akanji has an £6.7m contract offer on the table from Dortmund. United, on the other hand, have offered £12.6m a year to the Switzerland international. With a contract at BVB until just 2023, the Bundesliga club definitely have a decision to make.

The transfer becomes even more intriguing when you hear that United would be a ‘dream move’ for Akanji. However, the transfer could hinge on United’s Champions League status…

That’s a major issue. I don’t see how United qualify for that competition unless Arsenal capitulate in a major way. That looks pretty unlikely right now.

Money may well be the all-important factor, but if Akanji is as good as I believe he is, then other clubs will be keen on signing him. Those other sides may well be able to give him the best of both worlds in terms of money and ability to play in Europe’s premier competition.
