Man United are set to beat Tottenham Hotspur to the signature of Villareal centre-back, Pau Torres.
Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United is going to look a whole lot different to how our squad did in 2021/22. Several players will depart on free transfers. Others will be sold.
Those bodies will need to be replaced in some way, shape or form. It’s up to the Dutchman to acquire the right players that fit his system.
No doubt big money will be spent in all areas of the field, though signing a new centre-back seems to be close to the top of Ten Hag’s priority list. Pau Torres’ name is one that has been linked with a potential Old Trafford switch pretty recently.
Apparently, United are ready to pay the release clause to sign the 25-year-old defender this summer, which currently stands at £42.6m.
Ten Hag is desperate to sign a new centre-back for United, with Phil Jones and Eric Bailly set to leave. Factor in United having the fifteenth-worst defence in the Premier League last season and it is an absolutely glaring need.
Torres would be an astute signing if United could somehow pull it off. The Spaniard is a considerable upgrade on those guys that are expected to depart Old Trafford this summer, while the fee also seems pretty reasonable.
My main concern would be interest from other clubs. Spurs are mentioned. They have Champions League football on the table. I’d also expect other clubs to register interest as soon as they realise that Torres is available for transfer this summer.
This would be a nice piece of business. I’m just not convinced it’s going to happen.
