Man United rate Lyon right-back as a ‘very high’ transfer target

Man United are showing an interest in young right-back, Malo Gusto.

It seems clear that Aaron Wan-Bissaka isn’t really fitting into the Erik ten Hag system right now. The Englishman is thought to be available for transfer in the winter window.

If ‘The Spider’ is allowed to depart, that would leave Diogo Dalot as the only senior right-back. Given the fact he picked up a hamstring injury while away at the World Cup, that should set the alarm bells ringing.

It’s no surprise then, that United are now being linked with potential right-back signings. Several names have been mentioned by Florian Plettenberg – though one seems to be given more attention; Malo Gusto.

Apparently, the 19-year-old is rated ‘very high’ at United, with the player regarded as one of ‘several top transfer targets’ in the right-back position.

Teenager Gusto currently plies his trade for Lyon in Ligue 1, emerging as a regular starter over the last couple of seasons. He would be a ‘big solution’ to the right-back problem next summer, though he’d cost €30-40m.

On top of Gusto, both Jeremie Frimpong and Denzel Dumfries are also seemingly options for United, with Ten Hag ‘pushing’ to sign his countryman Dumfries in particular.

This is a situation I’d prefer United to solve sooner rather than later. If Wan-Bissaka leaves, a January signing of some sort is an absolute must. Either that, or United would have to recall Ethan Laird from his loan. He’s currently playing for QPR in the Championship.

It largely comes down to whether United have the funds available in January. It’d also depend on if any of the aforementioned transfer targets are genuine possibilities in the mid-season window.

Do you think a Man United move for Malo Gusto would make sense? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
