Man United’s move to sign Frenkie de Jong is now in doubt.

From day one, it felt like Erik ten Hag identified Frenkie de Jong as the number one priority for Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

It’s fair to say there has already been many twists and turns in this saga. A deal looked promising early, before De Jong himself publicly stated he’d like to stay with the Camp Nou club.

The pendulum would swing back in United’s favour due to Barcelona’s financial issues. However, the latest update from the usually reliable Jonathan Shrager is a massively concerning one…

He describes the De Jong situation as ‘not simple’. With the deal now looking in doubt. Barca manager Xavi wants to keep the player, while the Dutchman has always wanted to stay.

Barca’s financial situation has eased somewhat due to selling some TV rights, though their president, Joan Laporta, can now ask for more money from United. That’s if the Catalan side still have to sell at all…

This is worrying from a United standpoint. The club have spent so much effort on securing the De Jong signing, and if it fails at this stage, it’d be nothing but disaster.

We have to remember that two midfielders in the form of Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba have left. They need to be replaced with genuine quality during this window.

It’d also be a huge blow for Ten Hag if United couldn’t deliver him his number one signing. De Jong is a player who the new Reds boss is completely familiar with. He’s someone Ten Hag wants to build a side around. If he’s given disappointment at this late stage, I’m not sure where else he can turn in terms of top-class midfield signings.
