Man United are set to commence talks over a £55m move to sign Mason Mount.

This is arguably Manchester United’s most important transfer window in years. Erik ten Hag has a genuine chance to close the gap on the teams above the Red Devils, though he needs money.

With club ownership still up in the air, the situation becomes infinitely more complex.

That isn’t stopping United from scouring the market and looking for possible options. The latest story links United with a move to sign Mason Mount.

It comes from the Daily Mail, who claim that United are ‘launching’ a move to sign the 24-year-old, with a £55m offer.

Mount is entering into the final year of his contract, with there being a real possibility he leaves Stamford Bridge. Obviously, Chelsea do not want to lose the Englishman for nothing.

The Reds want to pay around £55m to sign Mount, though that falls short of Chelsea’s £85m valuation of the attacking midfielder.

It’s also stated that Ten Hag’s ‘determination’ to sign the player could lead to an increased bid from the Old Trafford club.

United’s intention to sign Mount this summer is ‘clear’, though the 20-time Premier League champions could face competition from both Arsenal and Liverpool to bring in the Chelsea man.

Mount is someone who’d fit this system well, though I do not think he’d be a guaranteed starter game-in-game-out. The Englishman would likely come in and out of the team, though his versatility does mean he wouldn’t be directly competing with Bruno Fernandes for starts.

If he’s okay with being a rotational option, then this feels like a good move. I am somewhat concerned by the £85m asking price, though…
