Man United have eyes on another centre-back. This time, it’s Benoît Badiashile.
There’s no doubt that Manchester United have already added genuine quality to their back line in the form of both Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia.
However, that hasn’t stopped the media linking Erik ten Hag with a move to bring in yet another central defender this summer…
It’s Benoît Badiashile whose name is in the headlines, with the AS Monaco man attracting interest from both United and Chelsea.
The claim comes from Sport Witness, relaying information from French media outlet L’Equipe.
According to the report, United are ‘keeping tabs’ on the 21-year-old centre-back, who has been a ‘long time contender’ as a possible option for Chelsea.
Apparently, Monaco will not make it easy on potential buying clubs, as they’ll demand at least £42m (€50m) to let one of their key players leave.
The first thing to note is that United are well-stocked, at least numbers-wise, in the centre-half position. Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof may well start the season on the bench, behind Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez. That’s before Eric Bailly even gets a mention…
You’d expect that at least one of these fringe players would have to be moved on first, before United spend another £40m on a left-sided defender.
My honest opinion is that I would be surprised if this is taken any further than initial interest by United. Badiashile is young enough that this is a transfer the Reds could revisit in a season or two, rather than someone who is likely to make the transfer to the Theatre of Dreams during this window.
The 20-time Premier League champions simply have other positions that should be prioritised.
