Man United are one of the sides showing an interest in Benfica striker, Darwin Nunez.
With Edinson Cavani likely to leave this summer, coupled with Anthony Martial’s uncertain future, Manchester United could well be in the hunt for a new forward.
Investing in that position seems vital to me. Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t getting any younger, though he will likely remain at the club in the 2022/23 season. The Portugal superstar needs help.
The Old Trafford club need to find someone who doesn’t mind rotating in and out of the line-up for a year, before picking up the baton in twelve months’ time.
A new name has been linked with a potential Reds switch this morning; Darwin Nunez.
The claim comes from Italian journalist Matteo Moretto. United are one of the sides showing an interest in the 22-year-old striker, with Arsenal and Atletico also keen.
Moretto stresses that no side has made an official offer for Nunez just yet, with his current club, SL Benfica, wanting around £63million (€75m) to let him leave.
This season, Nunez has come on leaps and bounds. He has 26 goals in 33 appearances, which is twelve more than his total of 14 during his debut season with the Primeira Liga outfit in 2020/21.
In terms of style, Nunez is a right-footed player who uses his insane athleticism to his full advantage. He’s best while on the counter-attack, running into open spaces and hurting the defence with his speed. He’s also pretty good technically, while the ability to play as a left-winger is another bonus.
Sure, Nunez is a little rough around the edges. Heck, he’s only 22 and still has plenty of growing to do. He’s already a fully-fledged international for his native Uruguay, winning eight caps thus far.
The money involved seems pretty steep, though United would do well to get him under market value given the clubs who are showing keenness on bringing him in.
