Man United are finally close to sealing the signature of Frenkie de Jong.
There can be no doubt that ever since Erik ten Hag walked through the door as manager, Frenkie de Jong has been the top target.
The transfer saga has been long and pretty painful for us supporters, with a fresh update coming almost daily. The pendulum has swung back on forth. One week it looks like De Jong is a sure thing, the next, the player is digging his heels in to stay with FC Barcelona.
Well, I’m pleased to report that the latest update from Goal’s James Robson is a highly positive one from United’s point of view.
According to Robson, United are ‘finally closing in’ on a deal to sign Ten Hag’s top transfer target, after ‘exhaustive’ negotiations with FC Barcelona.
The club have agreed to pay up to £71m to sign De Jong, with £63m of that coming in an upfront cost. The rest will depend on various add-ons and performance-based clauses being activated.
Despite De Jong’s public insistence on staying at the Camp Nou, United have always remained confident that they could reunite the player with his former Ajax boss at Old Trafford.
Goal claim that personal terms are yet to be agreed, though these negotiations are set to be concluded swiftly without any major problems.
Seriously, all credit to United. When De Jong publicly admitted he wanted to stay at the Camp Nou, I had major doubts about this deal happening.
The Reds have remained cool, calm and composed throughout. They haven’t overpaid or revealed their hand too early. Now, the De Jong signing looks closer than ever.
Hopefully, the minor details are all resolved pretty quickly and we’re not made to wait too long to see De Jong holding a United jersey aloft.
