Man United’s move to sign Frenkie de Jong this summer is now in doubt…
The Manchester United and Frenkie de Jong transfer saga has been full of twists and turns. A deal looked nigh-on impossible when the player spoke publicly about his desire to stay at FC Barcelona, then the pendulum swung in our favour.
Well, ESPN‘s latest article certainly makes for pretty grim reading from a United fans’ perspective…
According to their sources, United are now facing an ‘uphill task’ to sign their key transfer target this summer. Some may argue De Jong is Erik ten Hag’s number one priority.
ESPN sources claim that talks between United and Barca remain ongoing, but there ‘remains uncertainty’ about whether a deal is actually possible.
United have agreed a fee worth an initial €65m (£55m), but here are ‘significant hurdles’ to overcome before a deal is even close to being finalised. They include an issue around wages owed to De Jong, following the Dutchman taking a pay cut due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
On the other hand, ESPN add that there is a feeling another target, Lisandro Martinez, is ‘more attainable’. He can play in the midfield positions, hinting that if a deal for De Jong isn’t possible, the Argentine who currently plies his trade for Ajax could be an alternative.
Our stance on this one has been pretty clear of late. United have spent so much time chasing De Jong, losing out on his signature now would be an absolute disaster.
Other possible targets have now moved elsewhere, while United have delegated so much time to De Jong, they simply cannot fail at this late stage.
It’d also be hugely disappointing to Ten Hag, who is seemingly looking to build this new era around De Jong.
