Man United are in talks over a loan move to sign Jack Butland.

Martin Dubravka’s time at Manchester United wasn’t particularly successful, with the veteran goalkeeper now back at Newcastle United following a poor loan spell.

David de Gea has that number one position on lock right now. He has made some supreme saves lately, proving his worth to Erik ten Hag. However, he has very little in the way of competition.

Clearly, the gaffer doesn’t fancy Tom Heaton, while Nathan Bishop isn’t quite ready to back up De Gea at this point. That’s where Jack Butland comes in.

It’s the usually reliable Chris Wheeler in the Daily Mail providing the transfer information. Apparently, United have entered talks to sign the 29-year-old on loan.

Butland, who himself is currently a back-up at Crystal Palace, has been identified as the man Ten Hag wants to bring in to provide competition. To further add to that, there is ‘hope’ a deal can be reached.

Not too long ago, Butland was regarded as someone who could be amongst the best goalkeepers in the world, though that potential was never really fulfilled by the Englishman. That said, he’s a more than an adequate back-up.

This is nothing but a short-term deal for United. Basically, Ten Hag just wants someone of genuine quality to come in and play a part should De Gea get injured.

What it does tell us is that Heaton just isn’t good enough. I’d be surprised if he’s still at the club by the time the summer transfer window rolls around.

For now, though, the search to bring in another goalkeeper does go on. It remains to be seen whether a move for Butland will happen…
