The powers that be at Man United have determined a move for Sam Johnstone isn’t needed.

Manchester United have been a mess all season. The Old Trafford club have gone through two managers, both look like broken men as time wore on.

One thing is for certain. Neither Ole Gunnar Solskjaer nor Ralf Rangnick were the major problem. Moreso the onset of a slow rot, eating away at the club from the inside. It all stems from the top.

Our on-field performances have suffered as a result. This United side have been borderline atrocious for the most part. Conceding goals has been the real problem, with defence and midfield leaving our goalkeeper simply hapless in between the sticks.

There have been whispers this season about potentially bringing in another shot-stopper, with Sam Johnstone linked with a potential Reds return.

However, over the last 24 hours, those rumours have been quashed. The story comes from The Mirror. They say that United have now decided ‘not to press ahead’ with a move for the 29-year-old Johnstone.

Why? United believe they’re well-stocked in that position. Obviously, David de Gea has been our undisputed number one all season long, while Dean Henderson is waiting in the wings.

Johnstone himself feels he wants to move to a club where he’s closer to first-team action on a regular basis. Hence why now, Tottenham Hotspur are favourites to sign the Englishman.

I like Johnstone and I think he’d have been a good addition – but only if one of De Gea or Henderson are leaving. The former United academy product is nothing but a backup keeper at the highest level. Sadly for him, that’s the harsh reality.

I guess it all comes down to what Henderson wants over the next twelve months. For me, he deserves a shot at the number one jersey as his style is more in line with what Erik ten Hag wants to achieve. But if he’s got his heart set on leaving, then United shouldn’t stand in his way.

Would bringing back Sam Johnstone have been a good idea? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
