Man United are being linked with a move for Sergej Milinkovic-Savic yet again…
Erik ten Hag has been pretty desperate to bring Frenkie de Jong to Old Trafford this summer.
However, the chase has been unsuccessful thus far, with the Red Devils looking like they’re about to fall short in pursuit of the Dutch midfielder.
Sooner rather than later, other options will have to be considered. Over the last 24 hours, Calciomercato, with the translation coming from Sport Witness, link United with a move to sign Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
It feels like the Serbian has been mentioned in the same breath as United for each of the last five summers, so it wouldn’t be a traditional Red Devils transfer window without it, right…?
Anyway, Calciomercato state that United are now ‘turning their attention’ to the 27-year-old midfielder, due to their failed De Jong pursuit.
As a result, a move for Milinkovic-Savic has ‘come back into fashion’, though Lazio’s asking price hasn’t changed; £60m (€70m) in cash.
Nothing formal has happened yet, though the story states ‘manoeuvres behind the scenes’ are ongoing, with United launching an ‘assault’ to try and get a deal done.
The player himself isn’t pushing for a move, though if the right offer comes in, Lazio may well let Milinkovic-Savic go. He currently has two years left on his deal and the transfer value may never be higher if a new contract with the Serie A club isn’t signed.
United absolutely need to bring in a new midfielder this summer. The club have lost both Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic. Going into the campaign without a wealth of senior options in such a key position feels like a dreadful idea. Be it Milinkovic-Savic, De Jong or someone else, United absolutely have to sign a central player of some description.
