Pundit says Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane didn’t deserve POTM award for England vs Senegal
Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane was awarded the Player of the Match award after England eliminated Senegal from the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The Three Lions secured a 3-0 win against the Lions of Teranga in the last 16 stage of the competition. Kane had been impressive in the group stages, setting up three assists for his teammates.
But England’s star striker was yet to open his account. He did so against Senegal when he was set free on goal on a counter-attack by Manchester City’s Phil Foden.
According to Robinson, it was Jude Bellingham who should have been handed the award. The 19-year-old Borussia Dortmund star set up Jordan Henderson’s goal in the 39th minute to open the scoring.
It was his marauding run that led to Kane’s goal. He provided the pass to Foden in space, who in turn assisted the 29-year-old Tottenham star. Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Robinson said:
“I was surprised Kane got it because Bellingham had to be the man of the match for me… Him and [Kylian] Mbappe have stood above head and shoulders above everyone else at the tournament so far.”
“Kane was very good and he got his goal which was great to see. That will be a weight lifted off his shoulders for sure. Bellingham was definitely the best player on the pitch though. Make no mistake about that.”
Kane was excellent in the game as well. The work he does off the ball can go unnoticed at times. He created the space for England’s opener by drawing defenders towards him.

Kane dropped deep, which created space for the Liverpool midfielder to run into. His goal was also well taken and he really put in a captain’s performance. It’s fair to say Bellingham also deserved the award but Kane being given the prize is also not an unfair outcome.
