Tottenham Hotspur backed to sign Marc-Andre ter Stegen as Hugo Lloris replacement

Tottenham Hotspur have been told that Marc-Andre ter Stegen could be a smart option to replace Hugo Lloris. Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton highlighted the weakness in Hugo Lloris’ game.

“I think they need a long-term replacement. Lloris is 35 now, there is the odd mistake creeping in. I think Tottenham, moving forward, will want somebody coming in and pushing for number one.”

“They will want somebody who can play with their feet. I don’t think Lloris is overly great starting the ball from the back.”

As per Jeunes Footeux (h/t Express) [as covered by TTLAB] earlier this month, Spurs are said to prioritising a move for Barcelona’s Ter Stegen. According to Hutton, he makes for a good replacement that manager Antonio Conte can use in his system.

“Someone like Ter Stegen, who has got time on his side and can play with the ball could be an option moving forward.”

The 2017 Confederations Cup winner with Germany has a £438million release clause in his contract that doesn’t expire until the summer of 2025. He is currently 30 years old and while he has had his ups and downs in recent years, he is still a top goalkeeper.

Spurs don’t really have a readymade replacement for Lloris. Fraser Forster arrived from Southampton this summer but even he is in the final few years of his playing career at the age of 34.

We signed Pierluigi Gollini from Atalanta but the Italian goalie returned to Bergamo this summer at the end of his loan spell. Leeds United’s Illan Meslier has been touted as an option, who is perhaps one of the best young options around.

It remains to be seen who Spurs target in the future. Lloris has been an irreplaceable presence in our starting XI since he joined us from Olympique Lyonnais but all good things come to an end.

More Tottenham News:

The summer of 2024, specifically, is the date that Lloris’ stay at Spurs could end at the end of his contract. With regards to searching for a replacement, we can certainly do worse than Ter Stegen, who has won the UEFA Champions League in the 2014/15 campaign along with four La Liga titles.
