Academy Transfer News: Alfie Devine likely to leave Tottenham Hotspur on loan in January
Tottenham Hotspur U21 playmaker Alfie Devine was in fine form against Eintracht Frankfurt U21 earlier today. The development team lost 3-2 to the Germans.
However, it was Devine’s brace that gave manager Wayne Burnett a silver lining from this costly defeat at home. Spurs’ U21 team are now fourth in their UEFA Youth League group with three points from four games.
The U21 sides of both Sporting CP and Frankfurt are at eight points each. From what it looks like right now, Spurs will have to win both their remaining games and hope for either Sporting or Frankfurt to slip up in a major manner.
As for Devine, he may have bigger things planned for himself later this season. According to journalist Alasdair Gold of Football.London, Devine is ‘likely’ to leave on loan in the January transfer window if things go to plan.
Spurs weren’t shy of loaning out players this summer. Giovani Lo Celso (Villarreal), Harry Winks (Sampdoria), Joe Rodon (Stade Rennais), Tanguy Ndombele (Napoli), Dane Scarlett (Portsmouth), and Troy Parrott (Preston North End) were just some of the players sent out for a temporary stint outside N17.
Devine has the capability to become a first-team player for a club in the lower divisions of England. Those who have watched him play could attest to that.
Still just 18, it would be smart on Tottenham’s part to find a team that can give him exposure to senior football in a competitive division. The club wanted to loan him out this summer if not for a hamstring injury suffered by the attacking midfielder.
